Air Nautique Wake Games Arrives in Orlando
by Mike Weiss
04/13/2010 — More than 200 wakeboarders and wakeskaters from around the world will hit the waters of the Orlando Watersports Complex, when the Air Nautique Wake Games, presented by ROCKSTAR returns to Orlando, on April 29-May 2, 2010. The four-day-long pro-am competition teams amateur wake athletes with the top professional riders in the sport.
Ten preselected captains will host a live draft to field a team with a mix of male and female, pro and amateur riders. Each athlete will compete in their respective division, which is separated by age and skill-level, while contributing points toward a team score based on their individual placement in that division. Every division will crown a winner and the team with the highest total score will take home the team title. There are over 20 divisions featured at this year’s event, with athletes ranging from seven years old to 55 years young.
“During big competitions, the pro and amateur riders don’t really get a chance to interact, but at the Wake Games, we’ll be on the same team pulling for each other,” said pro rider and defending Wake Games team captain Rusty Malinoski. “It really puts things in perspective for us, when we compete alongside the same people who look up to us. Wake Games takes us back to our roots and gives the pros a chance to help aspiring riders.”
The Wake Games will host qualifying rounds for the athletes on Thursday and Friday, before Malinoski and the other nine captains draft their teams on Friday evening. Teams will begin accumulating points on Saturday and continue through Sunday.
In addition to all the action on the water; on land, Wake Games attendees will experience great food and music, athlete autograph signings, chances to win freebies, and shopping at the most cutting-edge stores offering water-sports equipment including boats, wakeboards, wakeskates, sunglasses and the latest in wakeboarding and surfing fashions.
Tickets are available online and at the event: $10.00 (general); $5.00 (ages 6-12); Free (ages 5 & under).
To catch all the high-flying, rail-sliding, water-sports action of the 2010 Wake Games from the comfort of your own home, tune in to FUEL TV on June 29 at 8 p.m. EST.
