"The Living Soil"

03/16/2010 — The DeBary Garden Club will be hosting Dana Venrick on Thursday, April 1 at 7:00 pm at Gateway Park in the Administrative Building Conference Room at 860 N. Highway 17/92. The topic for April will be the composition of soils. We will discuss what soils are consisted of, such as minerals, non-minerals, organic matter, and micro-organisms. We will discuss what makes a healthy soil. PH, is it a reliable indicator of good or bad soil for plants? Why plants need a balance of essential minerals. How minerals in soils are made available for plants. The nitrogen cycle in soils. Dana Venrick is an Extension Agent II at the Volusia County Extension Service. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a Master of Science degree from the College of Agriculture. His majors were in biology and botany. Dana has served as an Assistant Plant Pathologist and Plant Protection Inspector for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. He teaches and advises cut foliage producers, citrus growers, nursery growers, sod growers, golf course superintendents, other horticulturists, and pesticide applicators. The Debary Garden Club meets on the first Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm at Gateway Park. Meetings are free, new memberships are encouraged. Refreshments will be served.
